PLEASE BACK THE DAILY MIRROR CAMPAIGN FOR SARAH'S LAW
Mirror readers have voted massively in favour of the campaign for new laws to protect children from evil paedophiles. A staggering 32,008 readers backed the crusade on the first day in the wake of the horrific murder of 8 year old Sarah Payne.
Sarahs' Law would create a national register of sex offenders and give anyone the right to check it for paedophiles living in their area. The vote was one of the highest one-day polls in the Mirrors history, with 97% of readers saying they supported a change in the law.
The campaign was also given another significant boost when the childrens' charity, the NSPCC gave its qualified support for new legislation.
Three adults who suffered sexual abuse as children felt so strongly about the subject that they waived their anonymity to speak out against paedophiles. Mum Sue Welchman's attacker is a repeated child sex offender, whose crimes span three generations. The man - a casual family friend - was jailed after Sue went to the police 28 years after she was molested at the age of 11. Next month the 59 year old man will be released, having served just 18 months of a 3 year sentence for sexual assault. Now Sue, 41, is living in fear at her home in Dorset. She sasid: "For the sake of my four children and everybody else's, I want to know where he will be. I need to know he is not abusing other little kids, he cannot be allowed to wreck any more lives."
Retired tax officer, Janet Brown, 58, from King's Lynn, Norfolk, was attacked when she was 5. Now she hopes her ruined life will persuade MPs to change the law. She said: "I believe paedophiles need to be out in the open."
Sally Sambridge, 45, was abducted and abused at the age of 6. Sally, from Harlow, Essex, said: "My attacker went totally unpunished because in those days children were thought to make up fairy tales. I would very much like to see the law changed so children today can get better protection from paedophiles. Then maybe we wont see another set of parents like the Paynes having to go through hell.
NSPCC director Phillip Noyes said yesterday: "We believe in the principle that people should be informed about dangerous paedophiles in their area. How this is done and in what circumstances is a complex matter that needs to be fully discussed and resolved."
